The Process

Becoming a Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentor is as simple as 1-2-3.

The Application and Assessment Process

The following is a general overview of the process. The volunteer applicant:

  • Submits a written application to their local agency,
  • Submits a police record check and three or four references,
  • Participates in a one-to-one interview with the caseworker at the office and in their home,
  • Completes an orientation and child safety training,
  • Is notified of their acceptance/non-acceptance,
  • Signs an Agreement of Confidentiality,
  • Discussions around their match with a child of their choice.

The Matching Process

  • The caseworker is familiar with the volunteer and the children and youth waiting to be matched, discusses a potential match with the volunteer, the child and the parent or guardian.  If agreed by all...
  • The caseworker arranges for a match meeting between the child or youth, the volunteer, and the parent;
  • After the match meeting, the magic begins - the Big & Little get together once per week doing what friends do!
